Using Domain names with your Web hosting account

Aim of this article:

This article explains how you can use domain names with your Zen Shared Web Hosting account.

NOTE: Every Zen Shared Web Hosting account comes with a free subdomain name of the form www.yoursubdomain.myzen.co.uk . You can use this as your Web site address if you wish instead of your own domain name.

Using a domain registered with, or transfered to, Zen:

When you register or transfer your domain name to us instruct us to point it to your Web Hosting account. For details of our domain hosting packages please see http://www.zen.co.uk/Hosting/Domains.aspx

Using a domain registered with another company:

First instruct the company you have registered your domain with to point the A record to the IP address for your Zen Shared Web Hosting account. This will be the same IP seen when you check the record for www.yoursubdomain.myzen.co.uk . Many domain hosts allow you to change this yourself through a portal system.

  1. We would recommend that your domain host maintains the mail handler for your additional domain name, but that you instruct them to forward email to your Zen provided subdomain e-mail address. This will ensure you can take advantage of the Virus filtering with your Zen subdomain e-mail address.
  2. Alternatively point the MX record for your domain to an A record that points directly to the cPanel server. Note that although this will work fine no anti-virus filtering will take place.

NOTE: Do not instruct your domain host to change the name servers to Zen's. You should continue to use your domain host's name servers and only point the relevant A and/or MX records as required.

Configuring cPanel with your domain name:

Once the domain is pointing to your cPanel account log in to the cPanel Control Panel.

Click Parked Domains.

Enter your domain name and click Add Domain.

NOTE: Your domain name should be entered without www. or any other prefix.

Using additional domain names to additional Web sites on a Gold, Platinum or Reseller account:

* NOTE: This section is only applicable to Gold , Platinum or Reseller Accounts .

Reseller, Gold and Platinum cPanel accounts have the ability to host multiple sites with separate domains.  These are called "addon domains". The numer of addon domains you can use depends on the type of account you have purchased.

Domains registered with Zen or another company will need to be pointed to the cPanel account as detailed above.

Once the domain is pointed to the Web server correctly you should log on to the cPanel Control Panel.

Click Addon Domains.

Fill in the following details:

New Domain Name: Enter your additional domain name.
Subdomain/Ftp Username: Enter the FTP username you wish to use for this domain.
Document Root: Enter the name for a new folder where files for this site will be stored.
Password: Enter the password to be used for uploading files to the Web site.
Password (Again): Enter the password again to verify it is correct.

The security level of the password is displayed indicating its strength.  To increase the strength you must use letters in upper and lower case, numbers and symbols e.g. vEry5Tr0ngp@sSw0Rd

Once you are sure the information is correct click Add Domain.

A home directory should now be created with the domain name entered, together with an FTP user which only has access to this directory.
