Using FTP to upload to your webspace with SmartFTP 2.0

Aim of this article:

This guide is designed to help you publish a Web site, or any other files, to Web space provided by Zen.  See Related Articles for product-specific differences.

NOTE: Active Space supports FrontPage and .Net space supports FrontPage and Visual Studio .Net.  FTP would not be the recommended method of publishing to these products.

Configuring and using Smart FTP:

If you are uploading a Web site to the server you will first need to design it, and get it working on your own computer.

There are many FTP programs available, but this guide details the use of SmartFTP version 2.0 to manage your Web site or upload files to your space. Whilst this program is easy to use for beginners, it also contains a number of more advanced features, such as the ability to modify file permissions. SmartFTP is no longer free for personal or Non-Profit use, but can still be downloaded from http://www.smartftp.com/.

Once SmartFTP is installed and run for the first time you may be presented with a settings window. Simply press OK to close this menu.

The screen above is the next thing you will see. Three pieces of information are asked for here; the server AddressLogin (your username) and Password. These are indicated by red arrows in the picture above.

Click in Each box in turn and fill in your FTP information, as supplied in your Technical Details e-mail. The details you should configure here will depend on your Web hosting product. The following table provides further information:

Once the correct information is entered click the Connect button (indicated with an arrow in the picture below) and you will be connected to our FTP server, ready to upload your files.

Once you have connected you will be able to upload files to the server simply by dragging and dropping from your computer, just like in Windows Explorer.

You may find it helpful to bring up the local explorer window. Click on the icon, as indicated in the picture below, which will open a window to browse through the files on your local computer

Using the local browser you’ve just opened, locate the files you wish to upload and drag them to the window which represents your Web space.

The picture below demonstrates this process:

That’s all you need to do! If you are uploading a Web site remember to replace the page “index.html” with your own Home page, as this is the default page of your Web site.

Once all your Web site files are uploaded in this way they will be visible on the Internet at your Web address.  If you are uploading files, rather than a Web site, you may need to refer to them directly - or delete the existing index.html file so a full list of your files is visible when somebody browses to your Web space address.

NOTE: Zen recommend referring to files directly by URL - e.g. http://www.mysubdomain.myzen.co.uk/myfile.jpg.  Deleting the index.html would allow everybody who finds your site to view the files available - which may not always be desirable; for example, if you are uploading a file for a work colleague.
