Adding Custom rDNS (PTR) Records
Aim of this article:
This article describes the process used to create custom PTR records for ADSL and SDSL accounts, sometimes referred to as Reverse DNS, using the Customer Portal.
NOTE: If you have recently changed the forward A-record to point to the IP address for which you need custom PTR records there may be a delay before this change propagates. This means you won't be able to set up a custom PTR record immediately after changing the forward A-record.
Customers with Leased Line or Co-location services should refer to the section here for instruction on how to request custom PTR records for their services.
What are PTR/Reverse DNS records?
Domain names such as zen.co.uk have A records pointing them towards an IP address.
eg. zen.co.uk -> 212.23.2.21
Reverse DNS is a PTR record which points the IP address back to the domain name.
eg. 212.23.2.21 -> www.zen.co.uk
Be aware that only 1 PTR record may be added per IP address and a matching DNS A record must be in place before the PTR record is added.
Reverse DNS records are used a lot these days in authenticating e-mail delivery so are used predominantly by businesses which have their own mail server.
Accessing the Zen Portal
To access the Customer Portal browse to:
https://portal.zen.co.uk
If you are registered already enter your registered e-mail address and password and click Sign-In, and then Continue. If you are not registered click the Create Account button and follow the instructions provided.
Adding rDNS

Click the My Services button in the top menu bar.
You will now be presented with a list of options and tools relevant to your Zen Internet service(s).

Click the Manage Reverse DNS Settings from the Broadband & SDSL Settings section.

You may now edit the PTR records for your IP range. You can also Remove entries or reset them to Default.

When entering records you will need to be sure that matching DNS A records are in place, you will be advised if this is not the case. Also you should enter a full stop, '.' at the end of the record.
eg. pc1.testingdomain.com.
After entering each record click Change to commit the adjustment.
Custom reverse DNS entries for Leased Line and Co-location customers
In order to have custom rDNS set up for your Leased Line or Co-location service you must e-mail details of the records required to rdns.request@zen.co.uk
You should include your order number or account reference and you must be the registered owner or administrator of the domain you will be using with the rDNS entries. You should also include 'Leased Line' or 'Colo' in the subject line of your e-mail.
For each of the rDNS entries you request there must be a working, matching, forward record. The required format for requests e-mailed to Zen is as follows:
IP -> A-record
e.g. 1.2.3.4 -> mailhost.example.com
Please note - these requests are processed manually and would normally be actioned within 7 working days.
NOTE: *1 - Zen do not delegate authority for rDNS entries. *2 - Each IP address may only have one rDNS record. *3 - rDNS entries are set up at Zen's discretion.
